Who we are and what we do

How we tackle homelessness:

Cornerstone is an independent, secular, charity established in 2012 with the intention of helping people who are homeless, in danger of homelessness or housing distress. We provide the following to give adults and children affected by social and economic isolation a fairer chance to thrive  in their community:

  • Joinery training workshop 4,000 sq ft)
  • IT and education suite (4,000 sq ft)
  • Gym containing a wide range of cardio and weight-lifting equipment (2,500 sq ft)
  • Art and crafts workshop (1,000 sq ft)
  • Kitchen area
  • Disabled toilet facilities

Alternative Education Provision

          • Nine out of 10 adult, homelessness clients told us they did not attend school and that their
social and economic isolation began at this point. To address this, we have begun to deliver specialist training to children - who for varied reasons - do not find the tradition school education a fit for their learning needs.

Safe, high-quality housing ending homelessness

A dedicated worker helps residents overcome their barriers to moving forward in their housing, work, health, wealth and happiness. Repairing and building positive relationships with friends family and self is a key component of this work.

Cornerstone has developed a thriving retail arm as a byproduct of our joinery training and work. The importance of standing on your own two feet has been the driving force of Cornerstone's bid to make all parts of the charity financially sustainable by their own efforts. We feel this encourages our clients to strive for the same in their own lives so as not to be relying on the benefits system. We have two high street shops in Bishop Auckland and Hartlepool, a show room at our learning and training centre in Low Willington and Facebook page where our wooden products can be viewed and ordered.
