Release day can be a real headache for ex prisoners and many struggle to face it alone

Read more about our services here http://cornerstone-housing.org/abstinence-housing-and-prison-transition/ Abstinence housing and prison transition Cornerstone's Breaking The Chain initiative sees our staff visit prisoners who have undergone and successfully passed rehabilitation programmes in the weeks before release. The idea is to continue the excellent work done with prisoners and to ensure a smooth transition to the outside world that can often be a very intimidating and deflating place in the first few days of release. It is a sad fact that on release from prison many ex offenders walk out with nowhere to live, no chance of work, and a potential 14-day wait for benefit payments to be released. Many will not have family to support them and the friends they had before they entered prison are often a negative influence. A typical release day will require the ex prisoner to attend appointments with probation services, police, housing providers, local council officers and deal with cope with many difficult forms and long exasperating phone calls to various public body call centres.

Cornerstone staff meet the prisoner at the gate and match their every step through this difficult first day and through the weeks beyond.

Cornerstone staff meet the prisoner at the gate and match their every step through this difficult first day and through the weeks beyond. The staff member will be a familiar and reassuring face after the introduction visits to the jail. The client is then taken to their housing and all of their paperwork requirements met and introduced to all the benefits of our project. Without help on the day of release, 30% of prisoners offend within a year of release. On average, interventions such as Cornerstone's reduce reoffending rates on release to between 10 and 20%. We have developed effective, sustainable relationships with referrers, which enables us to provide holistic support for our service-users.
